New social media scheme launched to help improve community flood information
Norfolk County Council's Flood & Water Management Team is making it easier for citizens to report flooding incidents and stay up to date with flood prevention news, advice and community consultations through social media.
Jason Slack, from Norfolk County Council's flood and water management team, who will be running the social media platforms at the County Council said: "People can really help us by photographing or videoing a flooding incident as it happens. It is especially helpful if their images can show where the water is coming from, the direction of its flow and the full extent of where it accumulates.
"It is also helpful to provide as much description of where exactly the flooding took place, the date and time. This helps us to correlate it with scientific rainfall data which is measured across the county, which in turn helps build an understanding of the significance of the particular rainfall event."
However, Jason also urged people not to put pictures before safety.
He said: "There's no doubt that if you are faced with a sudden downpour and surface water flooding starts, your first priority must always be safety - for yourself and others around you. Any kind of flood water can be fast-moving or deep and can be extremely dangerous. We don't want anybody to put themselves in harm's way in order to take images or film for our purposes.”
Images and film can be emailed to water.management@norfolk.gov.uk or if more convenient, uploaded to a new facebook page www.facebook.com/NorfolkFlooding, or tweeted to @NorfolkFlooding
